Shared Resource Tree (SRT) restrictions for restoring Bare Metal Restore (BMR) Solaris 10 clients
Details:
Due to changes in the boot methodology introduced by
Solaris 10 Update 6, the BMR restore methodology for Solaris 10 clients has been
changed as it relates to the use of an SRT, both for the Prepare to Restore
operation as well as the actual restore. This includes both network based
boot restores and media based boot restores.
For Solaris clients at
Solaris 10 Update 6 or later, an SRT of level Update 6 or later is
required. An SRT created at level Update 5 or earlier will fail to
properly restore the client. New code introduced for this issue may also
cause error messages to appear for the Prepare To Restore operation.
A
client kernel level will determine what update is noted by BMR for this. Using
the command "uname -a" will show
the kernel level for the client. As an example:
# uname
-a
SunOS atxsol108 5.10 Generic_137137-09 sun4u sparc
SUNW,Sun-Fire-480R
The kernel value of 137137-09 is the first
released level of Solaris 10 Update 6. Any value of this level or higher
indicates an update 6 or Update 7 release. Those clients require an SRT of
Solaris 10 Update 6 or higher to be properly restored. See related Tech
Notes 322801 and 323877 for details as well.
If the noted kernel level is
lower than 137137-09, then the client is Solaris 10 Update 5 or lower. For
those clients you must use an SRT that was created using Update 5 or earlier
media.
Lastly, in order to create the SRT for Solaris 10 Update 6
or later, the BMR Boot Server must also be upgraded to Solaris 10 Update 6 or
later and have the appropriate EEB patch files installed. A properly
installed BMR Boot Server installed with Solaris 10 Update 6 can create an SRT
at the Solaris 10 Update 7 release.
