The default BEMCMD backup script entries to backup Exchange resources inserts invalid selections into the selection list script for Exchange 2003 and 2007 servers.

Exact Error Message
V-79-57344-33932 - Unable to attach to a resource. Make sure that all selected
resources exist and are online, and then try again.

Details:
An Exchange 2003/2007 backup script submitted by the Backup Exec BEMCMD command line utility fails when submitted using the default backup script options for Exchange resources.

In the Backup Exec 12.5 BEMCMD documentation on Page (149-151) the instructions indicate to enter
the following for Exchange resource selections:

[Selections]
EXCHANGE1=exchange_server_name
EXCH2ROOT1=exchange_server_name
EXCH2SG1=First Storage Group
EXCH2ROOT2=exchange_server_name
EXCH2SG2=Second Storage Group

The above backup scripts lines creates a selection list viewed in text view as:

\\exchange_server_name\Microsoft Exchange Directory\*.* /SUBDIR
\\exchange_server_name\Microsoft Exchange Information Store\*.* /SUBDIR
\\exchange_server_name\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group\*.* /SUBDIR
\\exchange_server_name\Microsoft Information Store\Second Storage Group\*.* /SUBDIR

The first two lines of the selection list are not valid for Exchange 2003 and 2007 resources.

The BEMCMD backup job if submitted will fail with the following error:

Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe000848c - Unable to attach to a resource. Make sure that all
selected resources exist and are online, and then try again.
Final error category: Resource Errors

Backup Unable to attach to \\exchange_server_name\Microsoft Exchange Directory.

V-79-57344-33932 - Unable to attach to a resource. Make sure that all selected
resources exist and are online, and then try again.

Unable to attach to \\exchange_server_name\Microsoft Exchange Information Store.

V-79-57344-33932 - Unable to attach to a resource. Make sure that all selected
resources exist and are online, and then try again.

The default BEMCMD backup script provided on the Backup Exec installation media (\WINNT\UTILS\bjscript.txt) documents the following command listed below.  This default script entries for Exchange resources  also creates the invalid selection list for Exchange 2003 and 2007 server backups selections.

(Example bjscript.txt)

/* Exchange should be given the name of an Exchange server. Any number of
EXCHANGEx entries can be given, e.g. EXCHANGE1=, EXCHANGE2=, etc. */
EXCHANGE1=exchange_server_name

WORKAROUND:

Edit the backup script or bjscript.txt per the BEMCMD admin guide (Page 150-151) and comment out the "EXCHANGE1=" entry and add the following line listed below:

[Selections]

//EXCHANGE1=exchange_server_name
EXCH2ROOT1=exchange_server_name
EXCH2SG1=First Storage Group
EXCH2ROOT2=exchange_server_name
EXCH2SG2=Second Storage Group
