Exclusion statements in the backup selection list against a NetApp (or IBM) filer will cause the job to not backup the expected total amount of data.
Details:
If the backup selection list for resources located on a
NetApp or IBM filer (running Ontap 7.x) contains
/EXCLUDE statements that
were created by de-selecting folders then the backup job will not backup all the
selected data, but will indicate that the job has completed successfully. The
byte count against the job will report as significantly less than the expected
byte count against the selection list.
The
/EXCLUDE statements can
only be seen by selecting the "
View Selection Details" tab in the
selection list which provides a text based listing of the selection
list. An image showing an example of a
/EXCLUDE statement can be
seen in Figure 1.

As well as the
reduced byte count the Job Log will show a couple of entries in the
NDMP Log section that confirm the issue is present, these entries are a
line stating "NDMP Log Message: DUMP: Using Partial Volume Dump with Exclude
Lists" in combination with an entry in the "NDMP Environment" section
stating "EXCLUDE=*.*,*.*,*.*" Note: the number of *.* entries in
this message will vary depending on how many folders were de-selected. An
example of these log entries can be seen in Figure 2.

A secondary
cause has also been identified where custom entries containing wildcard
characters (such as *.*) have been added to the Global Exclusion List in
the Backup Exec Console. The Exclusion List can be seen by
selecting Edit --> Manage Selection Lists..., selecting
Excludes and clicking on the Edit button.
