Agent for Microsoft Virtual Server (AMVS) Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) restore selections may not show up correctly when the Virtual Machine Guest has a corrupt or missing BOOT.INI file.

Details:
After backing up virtual machines using the Agent for Microsoft Virtual Server the virtual machine GRT restore selections are displayed as Volume GUIDS and not by the expected Virtual Machine Guest Names (NetBIOS or FQDN).

A Microsoft Virtual Server Agent GRT backup may complete with the following exceptions (FIGURE 1):

V-79-57344-38724 - Directory 'VOLUME{966C0055-96DE-11DD-A630-001EC9EBE15F}' does not support Granular Recovery Technology (GRT).
Granular restores cannot be performed for items in this directory.

(FIGURE 1)

The Microsoft Virtual Server Agent GRT restore selections displays VOLUME{GUIDS} for each volume on the Virtual Machine rather than the Virtual Machine's Servername as shown in (FIGURE 2).

Workaround:
This behavior has been observed when the Virtual Machine's BOOT.INI file is missing, corrupt, or improperly formatted.
Recreating the Virtual Machine's BOOT.INI resolves the issue.

A service pack is now available for this issue in the current version(s) of the product(s) mentioned at the end of this article. Refer to the service pack link under Related Documents at the end of this article to obtain the service pack needed to resolve the issue.
