Volume level backups of Windows 2003 servers using Advanced Open File Option and Volume Snapshot Provider (VSP) complete with an exception "The volume cannot be snapped using Advanced Open File Option (AOFO) because it is not a drive that is permanently attached to the target computer".
Details:
The above mentioned exception occurs when running a volume
level backup of server using Advanced Open File Option, which has
Microsoft Virtual Server (MSVS) 2005, R2 Edition installed on it.
Cause:
The issue is caused by orphan mount points in C:\temp or C:\Windows\temp
directory and normally happens during backup of Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2
SP1 guests through Shadow Copy Components -- User Data
E.g.-"C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\{0BF98E81-25D0-11DD-BF6B-001422510EF2}"
During this
Shadow Copy Component backup Microsoft Virtual Server's vhdmounter.exe or
Symantec VSP encounters a problem which results in a mount point being left
behind.
An attempt to
run a backup of a volume having such an orphan mount point, using Volume
Snapshot Provider results in the above mentioned exception.
Workaround:
To resolve this issue follow either of the steps below:
1.
Delete the orphan mount point from the disk .
Example :
"C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\{0BF98E81-25D0-11DD-BF6B-001422510EF2}"
Apply the
latest Microsoft VSS updates and Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1
updates.
NOTE: If
the orphan mount points continue to reappear after a Microsoft Virtual Server
Guest Backup all efforts should be made to resolve the Symantec VSP errors
during backup.
Apply the
latest Microsoft VSS updates and Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1
updates.
OR
2.
Perform snapshot backups of the volume using Microsoft VSS
