An Exchange mailbox restore from a Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) Information Store backup set completes successfully with exceptions and fails to restore the email attachments.

Exact Error Message
Restore- \\EXCHANGE\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group WARNING: The file TEST EMAIL was restored from a file that was corrupt when it was backed up.

Details:

An Exchange mailbox restore job may complete with the exception as shown above and fail to restore the emails which had attachments associated to them. The problem can occur irrespective of whether backup was done to tape or disk.

If Backup Exec debugging is enabled then the remote agent debug log on the Backup Exec server displays the error as shown below. For more information on how to enable debugging in Backup Exec please refer the Related Documents section below.

Workaround:

Restore the relevant mailbox database to a  Recovery Storage Group on the Exchange server (for Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 only) and then use the EXMERGE utility to retrieve desired mailbox/mailbox items.

Permanent Resolution:

The above problem is now fixed by way of a hotfix in Backup Exec 12.0 and 12.5. Please refer the Related Documents section for more information about the hotfix.
