How to recover from a continuous reboot condition after uninstalling Storage Foundation for Windows 5.0 (SFW) Rollup Patch 1 (RP1) on a 32 bit Windows Server 2003 system
Details:
There is a
potential issue after a reported successful installation of SFW RP1, where
Veritas Enterprise Administrator (VEA) will not start. The source of the issue
has been identified and resolution is part of the updated RP1A package.
Note: If
you have the original 5.0 RP1 package, do not install it on your SFW or SFWHA
systems. Please utilize the updated 5.0 RP1A package for any new upgrades. If
you have 5.0 system(s) installed with the original RP1 package that do not
suffer from this issue, you do NOT need to uninstall the original RP1 and
install the new RP1A.
If you have
installed the original 5.0 RP1 package, experienced the issue, and then tried to
uninstall RP1, you may experience a repetitive continuous reboot of the system.
If the system(s) are in the state of a repetitive reboot cycle after the
uninstall of the original 5.0 RP1 package please follow the below
directions.
Resolution
for system(s) running Storage Foundation 5.0 for Windows with RP1:
The following
steps are only for system(s) that are running Storage Foundation 5.0 for
Windows, had RP1 uninstalled, and experience a continuous reboot cycle. These
SFW system(s) can be running any combination of SFW options (DMP, FlashSnap,
MSCS and VxCache). These steps are not for systems running VCS. Please refer to
the next section for resolution instructions for SFWHA system(s).
Note: If
the server has multiple paths managed by Storage Foundation for Windows
DMP, please bring the server down to a single path before
proceeding.
1. Download the
following file below, which contains all SFW driver files that need to be copied
back into the affected system's Windows\system32\drivers folder.
2. Extract the
downloaded file and burn the contents to a CD so that they can be used while in
the Windows Server 2003 Recovery Console.
3. Boot off the
Windows Server 2003 media and enter the recovery console.
Note: Refer to
Microsoft support Web site for detailed instructions
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326215)
4. While in the
Windows Server 2003 Recovery Console, insert the CD that contains the contents
of the downloaded missing SFW driver files.
5. Copy all of
the drivers from the CD that contains the SFW missing driver files to the
affected system's Windows\system32\drivers
6. Reboot the
server. The server will properly start now that the missing driver files have
been properly restored.
7. Open
Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
8. Select
Storage Foundation for Windows 5.0 Server Components and select
uninstall.
Note:
SFW 5.0 has to be completely uninstalled to resolve this issue. Selecting the
SFW 5.0 Server components will also uninstall RP1.
9. Reboot the
system after the uninstall completes.
11. From within
the extracted WxRTCleanup download, navigate to the CleanupScript 32 directory
and run WxRTCleanup.bat.
Note: In order
to run the WxRTCleanup script, the Windows Installer Provider must be installed
on the system(s). This can be installed by performing the following:
- Open
Add/Remove Programs
- Select
Windows Components
- Select
Management and Monitoring
- Select
Tools
- Select
WMI Windows Installer Provider
- Select
Next until Add/Remove Windows Components wizard is
finished.
12.
Reboot the system after the WxRTCleanup.bat file finishes running.
13. Install SFW
5.0.
14. Reboot the
system after the installation completes.
15. Install
RP1A. The link to download RP1A is in the Related Documents section
below.
16. Reboot the
system after the installation completes.
17. If
utilizing Storage Foundation DMP, re-enable all paths.
Resolution
for system(s) running Storage Foundation High Availability for Windows 5.0 with

steps are only for system(s) that are also running Storage Foundation HA 5.0 for
Windows or Storage Foundation HA/DR 5.0 for Windows, had RP1 uninstalled, and
experience a continuous reboot cycle.
Note:
Refer to Microsoft support Web site for detailed instructions
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326215)
4. While in the
Windows Server 2003 Recovery Console, insert the CD that contains the contents
of the downloaded missing SFW driver files.
5. Copy all of
the drivers from the CD that contains the SFW missing driver files to the
affected system's Windows\system32\drivers
6. Reboot the
server. The server will properly start now that the missing driver files have
been properly restored.
7. Please open
a technical support case for remaining instructions and assistance in resolution
for SFWHA system(s). Due to configuration variation and complexities, it is
important to obtain the proper steps and guidance directly from Symantec Support
at this point in the recovery process.
