Backup Exec 10.d -11.d for Windows Servers: One or more Distributed File System Replication (DFSR) replication groups may not be visible for selection if replication folder names are exactly duplicated, and as a result some replication folders are not backed up.
Details:
A potentially
data threatening issue with backup using the Distributed File System Replication
(DFSR) capability was introduced with Microsoft's Windows 2003 R2 release. This
issue applies to Backup Exec 10.1 for Windows Server with Hotfix 31 (Windows
2003 R2 Support), and 11d (integrated R2 support). Any fixes included with
Hotfix 31 for BEWS 10.1 will be retained with the application of this hotfix.
All other versions of the product are not affected as they do not support
Windows 2003.
How to
Determine if Affected
The problem occurs when all of the following conditions
simultaneously exist:
- Backup
Exec 10d with Hotfix 31 (R2 Support), or Backup Exec 11.d for Windows Servers is
installed
and
- A
Microsoft Windows 2003 Server is configured with
R2
and
- The
DFSR (Distributed File System Replication) component has been added to the
Windows 2003 R2
Server
and
- Two
replication groups exist where each has a replication folder of the same
name.
Description
In the figure below
(Figure 1), there are two replication groups (Sales & Support), pointing to
two different folders. However the 'target' folders are named the
same.
The issue occurs because of the way in which the operating system
presents the replication objects. The operating system presents the
replication folder name, rather than the unique group name. As a result, when
two replication groups are presented with the same identifying folder name,
Backup Exec ignores the second and only displays the first folder selection for
backup.

Formal ResolutionThis issue has been resolved
in the hotfix and service packs listed below:
Symantec
Backup Exec (tm) 10.1 (10d) for Windows Servers revision 5629 Hotfix

Symantec
Backup Exec (tm) 11.0 (11d) for Windows Servers revision 6235 Service Pack

Workaround
The DFS Replication
data protection interface does not report the Group Name associated with the
Replication Folder names. Therefore, to alleviate name conflicts and to
better identify Replication Folder contexts, Symantec recommends including the
Replication Group name with in the Replication Folder name when creating a
Replication Folder.
Best
Practices
Symantec
strongly recommends the following best practices:
1. Always
perform a Full backup prior to and after any changes to your
environment.
2. Always make
sure that your environment is running the latest version and patch
level.
