Maintenance Pack provides fixes to the Veritas NetBackup (tm)
Windows 64-bit
server and clients.
Symantec recommends that the backing up of active
file systems be avoided,
or the use of snapshot technologies be implemented.
The directory structure
reported back from the file system (to NetBackup)
may not contain all of the
files available during the time of backup.
NetBackup will not report errors
in many cases where the file's existence is
not known to NetBackup as reported
by the file
system.

DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIONS

This is an update to
NetBackup/Media Manager products
with the latest fixes for Windows NT
NetBackup servers.
Download instructions:
1) Download the
NB_60_3_M.winnt.IA64_<6 digit number>.exe file into a
temporary directory.
where <6 digit number> is an internal
tracking identifier
2) Extract the NB_60_3_M.winnt.IA64_<6 digit
number>.exe by
double-clicking on
it.
This will create a number of files that
include:
README.64
and
Setup.exe

KNOWN ISSUES
=================
- If upgrading a NetBackup installation
type (for example, upgrading a client
to a master server) or adding a
NetBackup option to an existing installation
that has this pack
installed, this pack must be uninstalled from the system
prior to
upgrading or installing the additional options. After
performing
the upgrade, then you must reinstall this pack.
-
Push installations of a maintenance pack client are not supported in
a
clustered environment. Users must install the maintenance pack
on each
cluster node locally.
- For Volume Snapshot Provider
(VSP) users, a reboot will be required before
the latest VSP fixes
will take effect.

IV.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
=============================
NOTE: Symantec
recommends that you perform a catalog backup before and after
you apply this
maintenance pack.
For Maintenance Pack installation on Windows CLUSTER
Environment:
NOTE: Click on the "Download Now" link, near the bottom of
this document
prior to running the following installation procedure for this
pack.
1) Install this Maintenance Pack on the nodes of the cluster where
the
NetBackup group is inactive. (follow steps 1-4 below)
2)
Install this Maintenance Pack on the active node.
This should be done
when the NetBackup system is quiet, for example,
no backups or
restores running.
CAUTION:
Do not failover the NetBackup Group
until all NetBackup nodes (including
the active NetBackup node) have
the Maintenance Pack installed.
NOTE: On the active node, if you
have installed this pack on a secure
VCS Windows cluster environment that has
a NetBackup server with Enterprise
Media Manager (EMM), and are observing
that NetBackup does not come online,
the EMM database schema did not update
properly. To resolve this issue, you
must perform the following steps
on the active node in the cluster:
1. Take the NetBackup Server resource
offline.
2. Freeze the NetBackup Service group.
3. Make sure that the
Adaptive Server Anywhere – VERITAS_NB service is
started.
4.
Execute the following command.

dir>/NetBackup/bin/nbdb_upgrade.exe –dbn NBDB
5. Execute the
following command.

dir>/NetBackup/bin/admincmd/bpsyncinfo.exe

7. Bring NetBackup Server resource back online.
If you have
experienced this issue on the install then you will also
experience it on the
uninstall from the active node.

Installation
steps:
1) Close all NetBackup Windows.
Make sure the NetBackup
system has no active backups, restores,
duplications, etc., running.
If there are NetBackup activities in process,
the Maintenance Pack
will require a reboot if the file to update is busy.
If a
database client is being used, such as Oracle, ensure that the
database services are stopped. Database services can be stopped using
the
ControlPanel -> Services tool. Repeat this until all
databases have been
stopped. These services must be restarted once
the patch is successfully
installed.
2) Run Setup.exe
(Double-click on the icon from File Manager or Explorer or run
it
from the command prompt)
Setup.exe begins by stopping the
appropriate NetBackup Services required for
the Maintenance Pack
installation. Next, it will install the necessary files
into
their correct locations. Lastly, Setup.exe will restart the
appropriate
NetBackup services.
3) Examine the
<TEMP>\NetBackup Install.Log file to ensure that no errors took
place during the installation.
4) Remove the temporary
directory created in the download instructions.
NOTE: If you are
installing the Maintenance Pack using the silent install script,
please
review the <TEMP>.Log after the installation is finished,
a reboot
maybe required to complete the installation of the Maintenance
Pack. A
search of the log for the key words "in use" will indicate
which files were busy
during the installation.
NOTE: Symantec
recommends that you perform a catalog backup after you have
applied this
maintenance pack.

V. UNINSTALL
INSTRUCTIONS
=========================
To uninstall the Maintenance Pack
from a Windows CLUSTER Environment:
1) Uninstall this Maintenance Pack
from the nodes of the cluster where the
NetBackup group is inactive.
(follow steps 1-2 below)
2) Uninstall this Maintenance Pack from the
active NetBackup node.
This should be done when the NetBackup system
is quiet, for example,
no backups or restores running.
NOTE: On the active node, if you are uninstalling this pack on a
secure
VCS Windows cluster environment that has a NetBackup server
with EMM and
you had to execute the NBDB upgrade command manually on
the pack install,
then perform the following steps to
uninstall.
a. Offline the NetBackup Server resource.
b. Freeze the NetBackup Service group.
c. Make sure that the Adaptive
Server Anywhere – VERITAS_NB service
is
started.
d. Execute the following
command.
<install
dir>/NetBackup/bin/nbdb_upgrade.exe –dbn NBDB -downgrade
e.
You can now uninstall the pack.
f. Unfreeze the NetBackup Service
group.
g. Bring NetBackup Server resource back
online.
CAUTION:

**Important notice regarding
un-installs on Windows**
Only the last Maintenance Pack installed on a
Windows system
can be un-installed.

Description:
If catalog
compression was used on a UNIX master server, the bpdbm
process
would not remove client images properly during catalog cleanup if
those images were
compressed.
Over time, the disk space
consumed by these images that were not removed
properly during
catalog cleanup can be significant, although the exact
amount
of extra disk space is highly dependant on retention level
and
catalog compression configurable settings. (This
problem does not affect
Windows master servers.)
Additional Notes:
Avoiding a "disk full" condition by
having sufficient available disk space
for the image catalog
prevents any operational problems.
If
NetBackup 6.0 has been in use for some time and this problem has been
encountered, it is possible that the disk space consumed by
the image
catalog (the /usr/openv/netbackup/db/images
directory) will shrink
noticeably the first time that catalog
cleanup is run after this fix is
applied. Because this is
an expected result of applying this fix, do not
be concerned
about this reduction in disk space consumption, no usable
files
have been deleted.
Symantec recommends that a
current catalog backup be completed and
available for recovery
before applying the fix in case something unexpected
happens
and there is a need to recover the catalog from the current
catalog
backup image be
encountered.

**Description:
The Enterprise Media
Manager (EMM) server uses a relational database to
store media
and device configurations. When the file system runs out
of
disk space, the relational database files that the EMM
database uses can
become corrupt. This can cause the EMM
database to fail to start and
cause backups to fail on the
master server. To correct this situation,
the EMM server
process monitors disk space and safely shuts down the
EMM
database in the event of a disk-full condition.

your NetBackup 5.x media servers share one pool of drives and all
of

Full catalog disaster
recovering from an older catalog backup is
a
“roll-back” operation, that has potential of
losing data. Users should
understand the implications and use
it with caution.

catalog disaster recovering from an older catalog backup is a
“roll-back” operation that has the risk of data
loss. Users should fully
