Recommendations on use of Space-Optimized (SO) snapshots in Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC 5.0
If you use Volume Manager mirroring, Space-Optimized (SO) snapshots are recommended for Oracle data volumes.
Keep the Fast Mirror Resync regionsize equal to the database block size to reduce the copy-on-write
(COW) overhead.
Reducing the regionsize increases the amount of Cache Object allocations leading to performance overheads.
Do not create Oracle redo log volumes on a space-optimized snapshot.
Use "third-mirror break-off" snapshots for cloning the Oracle redo log volumes.

Cluster Volume Manager (CVM) fail back behavior for non-Active/Active arrays
This describes the fail back behavior for non-Active/Active arrays in a CVM cluster. This behavior applies to A/P, A/PF, APG, A/A-A, and ALUA arrays.
When all of the Primary paths fail or are disabled in a non-Active/Active array in a CVM cluster, the cluster-wide failover is triggered. All hosts in the cluster start using the Secondary path to the array. When the Primary path is enabled, the hosts fail back to the Primary path.
However, suppose that one of the hosts in the cluster is shut down or disabled while the Primary path is disabled. If the Primary path is then enabled, it does not trigger failback. The remaining hosts in the cluster continue to use the Secondary path. When the disabled host is rebooted and rejoins the cluster, all of the hosts in the cluster will continue using the Secondary path. This is expected behavior.
If the disabled host is rebooted and rejoins the cluster before the Primary path is enabled, enabling the path does trigger the failback. In this case, all of the hosts in the cluster will fail back to the Primary path. [e1441769]

VEA service takes a long time to start
VEA service takes a long time to start if the configuration contains large number of LUNs (1403191)
In configurations with large numbers of LUNS which need to be discovered, the VEA service may take a long time to start. The long start-up time may cause the boot time to be longer than is allowed.
Workaround:
The solution is to start the VEA service in the background, so that the boot continues while the LUNs are discovered.
To start the VEA service in the background:
1. Edit the VEA start-up script.
For Storage Foundation 5.x, use the following command:
# edit shell script /opt/VRTSobc/pal33/bin/vxpalctrl
2. In the start_agent() function, add the following line:
exit 0
Before the lines:
max=10
count=0

Veritas 5.0 Storage Foundation Cluster File System Documentation Issues
Updates to the Release Notes for Veritas Storage Foundation Cluster File System (SFCFS)
Documentation Errata - Installation Guide
In the SFCFS Installation Guide the following section is missing in the upgrade chapter.
Disk layout Version 6 is not supported on SFCFS 3.5 or 4.0; you cannot upgrade the file system to disk layout Version 6 or 7 with SFCFS 3.5 or 4.0. Perform the following procedure to upgrade SFCFS to 5.0.
Upgrading from SFCFS 3.5 or 4.0 to SFCFS 5.0
1) Upgrade SFCFS to 5.0 using the installsfcfs script.
2) Mount each CFS file system as a local VxFS non-cluster file system
on one of the nodes.
# mount -F vxfs <device> <mount_point>
3) Perform an online upgrade of the local mounted disk layout Version 4 or 5
file systems to disk layout Version 7.
# vxupgrade -n 7 <mount_point>
4) After the disk layout version is successfully upgraded, unmount the
file system.
# umount <mount_point>
5) Cluster mount the file systems using either the '-o cluster' mount option
or using the cfsmntadm and cfsmount commands.
See the mount_vxfs(1M), cfsmntadm(1M) and cfsmount(1M) manual pages.
For Veritas 5.0 Storage Foundation Cluster File System Release Notes the following known issue is missing:
If a large message of the day or other notification is present the installation scripts might be unable to complete the OS detect and therefore fail.
Workaround: Minimize or remove the large message of the day or other notification that is present on your system and try the installation script again.
For Veritas 5.0 Storage Foundation Cluster File System Administrator's Guide step 6 in the "Setting up the disk group for coordinator disks" section on page 45 is incorrect.
It should read as follows:
6) Add the other two disks to the disk group.
# vxdg -g vxfencoorddg set coordinator=off
# vxdg -g vxfencoorddg adddisk c2t1d0
# vxdg -g vxfencoorddg adddisk c3t1d0
# vxdg -g vxfencoorddg set coordinator=on
See the Veritas Volume Manager Administrator's Guide.
Mixed platform remote and cluster installation and uninstallation are not supported
VCS requires that all nodes in the cluster use the same processor architecture and run the same operating system version. All cluster nodes must be at the same patch level. See the Veritas Cluster Server Installation Guide for supported operating systems. See the Symantec Hardware Compatibility List for supported hardware.

Array Support Library (ASL) Software Packages for Volume Manager (VxVM)
VxVM provides support for disk arrays in the form of Array Support Library (ASL) software packages. You can obtain ASL packages from the VxVM release package on the 5.0 software disc. The ASL names for 5.0 may have changed from past releases.
Software disc cannot be ejected during installation
During installation, if any of the products that contain VxVM were configured and started, the software disc cannot be ejected. This will prevent further use of the disc drive. This would impact installation of packages from the language pack disc. This problem is not an issue if a product was installed or upgraded that required a system reboot to complete the installation.
To avoid this problem at install time:
1. Specify the -installonly option to the installation script in addition to any other options. This will install the packages only.
2. Eject the software disc
3. Run the appropriate installation script, which is in /opt/VRTS/install, with the -configure option specified
If the software disc cannot be ejected:
1. Use the fuser (1M) command to identify processes using the disc device. Note the process IDs for the vxcached, vxrelocd, and the respective vxnotify child processes. If fuser cannot identify them, use the ps (1M) command
2. Stop the event source daemon: # /usr/sbin/vxddladm stop eventsource
3. Kill the vxcached, vxrelocd, and vxnotify processes by using the kill -9 command with their process IDs, as determined in step 1
4. Eject the software disc
5. Restart the Volume Manager daemon processes:
# /usr/sbin/vxddladm start eventsource
# /etc/vx/bin/vxcached &
# /etc/vx/bin/vxrelocd &
Node and host name expansion
As part of the Software Pack (SPK) for HP-UX 11i v2 of May 2005, HP provided an optional Node and Host Name Expansion (NodeHostNameXpnd) product bundle, revision B.11.23.01. This product bundle enables the capability to create node and host names of up to 255 bytes. The current limitation is 8 bytes for node names and 64 bytes for host names. Installation of this product bundle does not automatically activate 255 byte length support for node and host names. The default OS configuration will still be 8 bytes for node names and 64 bytes for host names. You must enable a dynamic kernel tunable parameter, expanded_node_host_names, using the kctune command to allow the use of larger names on the system. Veritas 5.0 products for HP-UX were not tested with the Host Name Expansion bundle and therefore do not support node and host name expansion.
Mixed PA-RISC and Itanium clusters are not supported
Within a cluster, all systems must run on the same processor type and use the same operating system version and patch level.
Veritas Enterprise Administrator (VEA) components not starting
If the components required by VEA do not start after installing 5.0, use this command to verify that the components have been configured:
# ./installer -configure
Storage Foundation HA installation failure on the 1205 release of HP-UX 11iv2 - e83837
Customers installing Storage Foundation HA on the 1205 release of HP-UX 11iv2 (11.23) may have the installation exit with a message similar to "VCS is not running on first target node". The workaround for this issue is to first install and configure Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) and then install Storage Foundation.
Updates to the Release Notes for all products that include Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM)
Remove ASL and APM packages before upgrading
The array support library (ASL) and array policy module (APM) packages provided with VxVM 5.0 are not installed correctly unless any existing pre 5.0 ASL and APM packages are removed from the system.
Workaround: Uninstall all existing ASL and APM packages on the system before upgrading to Storage Foundation 5.0
PGR keys are not cleared
Problem Description - With all primary paths inaccessible, the deport operation on a shared disk group fails to clear the PGR keys as the dynamic multipathing (DMP) database is not up-to-date. The deport operation succeeds but the PGR keys are not cleared as the DMP database is not updated to reflect the inaccessibility of failed primary paths.
Workaround - Running vxdisk scandisks before the disk group deport operation triggers DMP reconfiguration which updates the DMP database such that a disk is accessible through active paths.
Updates to the Release Notes for Veritas Cluster Server
Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) issues
installvcs script, the installer does not update the types.cf file
If you upgrade VCS to 5.0 using the installvcs script, the installer does not update the types.cf file with the type definition for RemoteGroup agent.
Workaround: After upgrading VCS, you must manually add the type definition for the RemoteGroup agent from the /etc/VRTSvcs/conf/types.cf file to the updated types.cf file.
VCS used with large configuration with more than 2000 resources or more than 50 groups
When VCS is used with large configuration with more than 2000 resources or more than 50 groups , HA daemon may miss heartbeats to GAB if we offline all the groups together . In order to avoid such a performance impact, a user needs to move triggers (/opt/VRTSvcs/bin/triggers/*) into some other directory.
Configuring of security on single node cluster fails (622706)
The installvcs -security command fails with the following message: Veritas Cluster Server is not configured on <system_name>"
VCS configuration wizards do not start on HP-UX PA secure clusters.
Workaround:
1. Create a directory
hpux32 in
/opt/VRTSat/lib 2. Create the following soft link:
ln - s /opt/VRTSat/lib/AtWrapper.jar /opt/VRTSat/lib/hpux32/AtWrapper.jar
Cluster Management Console (CMC) issues
CMC_SERVICES domain does not get removed on uninstall.
Uninstalling the Cluster Management Console management server does not remove the CMC_SERVICES domain.
Workaround: Remove the domain manually:
1. Verify the domain exists:
vssat showpd --pdrtype ab --domain CMC_SERVICES
2. Remove all principals in the domain:
vssat deleteprpl --pdrtype ab --domain CMC_SERVICES --prplname [principal name]
3. Delete the domain:
vssat deletepd --pdrtype ab --domain CMC_SERVICES@[hostname, as shown by showpd]
Cluster Management Console does not display localized logs (620529)
If you install language packs on the management server and on VCS 5.0 cluster nodes, the Cluster Management Console does not initially show localized logs.
To resolve this issue:
1. On each on each node of the cluster, create the following symbolic link:
From
/opt/VRTS/messages/ja to
/opt/VRTSvcs/messages/ja
2. If the cluster is connected to the management server, disconnect and then reconnect the cluster
Updates to the Release Notes for Veritas Storage Foundation Cluster File System (SFCFS)
Documentation Errata - Installation Guide - Making the file systems clean
In the SFCFS Installation Guide, "Making the file systems clean" section on page 45 in between step 5 and 6, the following step is missing:
Type the following command on one upgraded node to enable membership:
# gabconfig -xc
In the Veritas Storage Foundation Cluster File System Release Notes, the "Support for SFCFS configurations larger than 16 nodes" issue in "Known issues" section should be ignored. This is a not a known issue.
In the Veritas Storage Foundation Cluster File System Release Notes, the "Support for 32 cluster nodes" feature in the "New features" section should instead have the following header and text:
Support for SFCFS configurations larger than 16 nodes
SFCFS 5.0 is capable of supporting cluster file systems with up to 32 nodes. Symantec has tested and qualified SFCFS 5.0 cluster file system configurations of up to 16 nodes at product release time. For the latest information on SFCFS support issues, refer back to this TechNote on a regular basis.
Version 4 and Version 5 disk layouts
In the Veritas Storage Foundation Cluster File System Release Notes, the "Version 4 and Version 5 disk layouts" feature in the "No longer supported and future support issues" should have the following first sentence instead of the existing first sentence: VxFS disk layout Version 4 and 5 are not supported for cluster mounts in SFCFS 5.0.

Updates to the Release Notes for Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC (SFRAC)
· The VxDBA utility is now called SFBD utility.
· SF Oracle RAC does not support the Veritas Storage Foundation GUI.
HP-UX operating system may panic due to communication failure
The HP-UX operating system may panic if HAD fails to communicate with GAB within a predetermined interval.
Workaround: Verify whether you need to tune the operating system to accommodate the workload. Swap space, operating system, and application parameters are some of the tunable parameters that you can verify.
Software disc may not eject after SFRAC installation
The DVD may not eject after the SF Oracle RAC 5.0 installation is complete. You can eject the disk after you reboot the system at the end of the installation.
Adding disks to the coordinator disk group
Adding disks to the coordinator disk group is not allowed when the attribute coordinator is set to on. See TechNote 283974 in the Related Documents for more information.
SF RAC configuration program does not prompt to set up the VCS global cluster
If you use the installsfrac script to configure SFRAC, the configuration program does not prompt you to set up the VCS global cluster. Note that if you use the Veritas product installer, the configuration program prompts you to set up the VCS global cluster.
Workaround: If you want to set up a global cluster, refer to Chapter 19, "Configuring global clustering" in the Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC Installation and Configuration Guide.
Changes for the Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC Installation and Configuration Guide
In Chapter 22, the section "Upgrading from Veritas Database Edition 3.5 for Oracle with Database FlashSnap" is not applicable for SFRAC.
In Chapter 13, the section "Installing CRS" has incorrect instruction to install the init.cssd patch. The following step replaces step 9 in the "Installing CRS" section.
Before you run the root.sh script, you need to add the init.cssd.patch.
a. Open another window on the system where you are running the installer
b. Log in as superuser
c. Change to the directory where the patch is to be copied:
For Oracle 10gR1: # cd $CRS_HOME/css/admin
# cp /opt/VRTSvcs/rac/patch /init.cssd-10gR1.patch .
For Oracle 10gR2:
# cd $CRS_HOME/css/admin
# cp /opt/VRTSvcs/rac/patch /init.cssd-10gR2.patch .
d. Run the following command to install the patch:
For Oracle 10gR1:
# patch < init.cssd-10gR1.patch init.cssd
For Oracle 10gR2:
# patch < init.cssd-10gR2.patch init.cssd
e. Run the root.sh script. For example:
# cd $CRS_HOME
# ./root.sh
This starts the CRS daemons on the node where you enter the command.
In Chapter 14, the section "Applying Oracle Patchset" for Oracle 10g does not include the instructions to patch the init.cssd script. Before you perform step 2 of applying an Oracle 10g patchset, do the following step: Make sure to patch the init.cssd script before you run root<xxx>.sh script
For Oracle 10gR1: a. Change to the folder where you want to copy the init.cssd patch:
# cd /$CRS_HOME/install/patch<xxx>/css/admin
# cp /opt/VRTSvcs/rac/patch/init.cssd-10gR1.patch .
b. Run the following command to install the patch:
# patch < init.cssd-10gR1.patch init.cssd
For Oracle 10gR2: a. Change to the folder where you want to copy the init.cssd patch:
# cd /$CRS_HOME/install/patch<xxx>/css/admin
# cp /opt/VRTSvcs/rac/patch/init.cssd-10gR2.patch .
b. Run the following command to install the patch:
# patch < init.cssd-10gR2.patch init.cssd

http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/283721 CSSD agent mandatory for SF Oracle RAC installations
You must configure the CSSD agent after installing Oracle Clusterware. The CSSD agent starts, stops, and monitors Oracle Clusterware. It ensures that the OCR, the voting disk, and the private IP address resources required by Oracle Clusterware are online before Oracle Clusterware starts. Using the CSSD agent with SF Oracle RAC installations thus ensures adequate handling of inter-dependencies and prevents premature startup of Oracle Clusterware.
During system startup, the Oracle Clusterware init scripts invoke the clsinfo script provided by Veritas software. The clsinfo script ensures that the OCR, the voting disk, and the private IP address resources are online before the cssd resource comes online. After the underlying resources come online, the CSSD agent starts Oracle Clusterware.
During system shutdown, the agent stops Oracle Clusterware before the OCR and voting disk resources are taken offline. This ensures that Oracle Clusterware does not panic the nodes in the cluster due to unavailability of the required resources.
