Final error: 0xe000851d - The backup selections for this job include Shadow Copy Components or Microsoft Exchange, which can only be snapped by the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). Select VSS as the snapshot provider, or select the option 'Automatically select open file technology'

Details:
The above message can occur if the option Automatically select open file technology is not checked. This option enables Backup Exec to select the best snapshot method to use for the type of data being backed up.

To change the default settings go to Tools > Options > Settings > Advance Open File Option and select the option. (Figure 1)

To change the current job settings go to Job Setup tab, right click the job to select Properties.  Click on Advance Open File and select the option. (Figure 2)

Also make sure that the server has Microsoft patch KB940349 installed (Only for Windows 2003) as this provides numerous updates to VSS, details of which are available at
