AOFO: Initialization failure on: "C:". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). Snapshot provider error (0xE0008524): Unable to initialize the snapshot because the Advanced Open File Option (AOFO) is not installed on the target computer.

Exact Error Message
Snapshot provider error (0xE0008524): Unable to initialize the snapshot because the Advanced Open File Option (AOFO) is not installed on the target computer. You must install this option, restart the computer, and then run the job again.
Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.


Details:


While doing an AOFO backup, the following error is encountered.

AOFO: Initialization failure on: "C:". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot provider error (0xE0008524): Unable to initialize the snapshot because the Advanced Open File Option (AOFO) is not installed on the target computer. You must install this option, restart the computer, and then run the job again.
Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.



The error above occurs, even though AOFO is installed properly on the machine, and the Remote Agent debug log shows the following:

Error: Misc regkey not found under Engine???. Could not register providers
[3652] 05/09/05 12:55:25 Snapshot Error (3758130468) initializing VSS snapshot provider.
[3652] 05/09/05 12:55:25 SnapshotBackupEngine::open_file_systems failed. No snap possible.
[3652] 05/09/05 12:55:25 SnapshotBackupEngine::GetDependentVolumeList failed. No snap possible.
[3652] 05/09/05 12:55:25 ndmpdSnapshotPrepare2: Snapshot error. ErrorCode: 0xe0008524 ErrorLevel: 2 Error Src: 2
[3652] 05/09/05 12:55:25 ndmpdSnapshotPrepare2: sending reply...
[3652] 05/09/05 12:55:25 ndmpdSnapshotPrepare2: cleanup: all done
[3652] 05/09/05 12:55:25 AssertPrivilege( SE_SECURITY_NAME ) failed: Not all privileges referenced are assigned to the caller.


This above error can occur if the VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) service account has not been granted the correct privileges (including privileges for group policies).
The account should have Full Administrator rights on the server being backed up.  Also, the following rights may be assigned to the account through the group policy:

1. Act as Part of the Operating System
2. Backup Files and Directories
3. Create a Token Object
4. Logon as a service
5. Manage Auditing and Security Log
6. Restore Files and Directories
7. Take ownership of files and other objects.

Scenario 2
If the Remote agent (beremote) log shows the following output :-
[4420] 03/12/09 13:34:28 Attempting VSP Provider
[4420] 03/12/09 13:34:28 Snapshot factory, using VSP as the snapshot provider.
[4420] 03/12/09 13:34:28 Snapshot Error (3758130432) initializing VSP snapshot provider.
[4420] 03/12/09 13:34:28 VSP Provider not available
[4420] 03/12/09 13:34:28 SnapshotBackupEngine::open_file_systems failed. No snap possible.
[4420] 03/12/09 13:34:28 SnapshotBackupEngine::GetDependentVolumeList failed. No snap possible.
[4420] 03/12/09 13:34:28 ndmpdSnapshotPrepare2: Snapshot error. ErrorCode: 0xe0008500 ErrorLevel: 2 Error Src: 2
The error can be due to VSP driver file corruption on affected machine.
Resolution
Follow the Technote - 253620 in the Related documents section below to uninstall and reinstall and the AOFO option on the machine.
Please make sure the machine is rebooted after uninstalling the AOFO from the machine.
