How to enable debug logging in Backup Exec 10.x or higher for the Agent for SharePoint Portal Server
Details:
Debug logging
for the Backup Exec Agent for Sharepoint Portal Server is enabled by toggling a
registry key on all servers within a Sharepoint Portal Farm. This includes
Front-end Webservers, Index servers, Search Servers, Job Servers, and the
Database server. The following process enables debug mode for both the
Sharepoint Portal Server Agent and the Remote Agent for Windows Servers on a
single server. It is important to create both of these files at the same
time on all servers within a given Sharepoint Portal Server Farm.
Warning:
The resolution of this issue requires the registry to be edited with the Windows
registry editor. Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor can have
disastrous results on a server operating system. Great care should be taken when
making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be
carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor
application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and
workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.
To enable debug
logging for the Sharepoint Portal Agent, follow the steps below on all servers
within the SPS Server Farm:
1. Click
Start | Run and type REGEDIT to open the Windows registry
editor
2. Browse the
registry tree to the following registry key for the appropriate version of
Backup Exec:
For
Backup Exec 10.x - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VERITAS\Backup
Exec\\Engine\Logging
For
Backup Exec 11.x or higher - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SYMANTEC\Backup Exec
for Windows Servers\Backup Exec\Engine\Logging
3. Double-click
the CreateDebugLog registry value to open the Edit DWORD Value
dialog box (Figure 1)

5. Close the
Windows registry editor to save the changes made.
6. Restart the
Remote Agent for Windows Servers.
The SPSWrapper
and Remote Agent logs will be located in the Program Files\RANT\Logs or the
Program Files\Backup Exec\Logs directory if Backup Exec is installed. The
files are named with the name of the server they were created on, the text
SPSwrapper or Beremote, a number which increments each time the Remote Agent
service is cycled, and have the .log extension. The latest logs can be
determined by checking either the incremental number or the modified dates of
the log.
Example:
Server-SPSWrapper00.log, or Server-Beremote02.log
Note: The registry setting has to be changed to
"0" after completing the debug to disable debugging.
