Exact Error Message
Backup- SERVERAOFO: Initialization failure on: "Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot provider error (0xE000FED1): A failure occurred querying the Writer status.
Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.
Writer Name: Removable Storage Manager, Writer ID: {5D3C3E01-0297-445B-AA81-A48D7151E235}, Last error: 0x80042319, State: Failed during freeze operation (9).  Consult your Microsoft documentation for details. Check the Windows Event Viewer for corresponding application or system errors.

Details:
The backup of a Windows 2003 server fails with the above-mentioned error (Figure 1).

This error usually occurs if the Volume Shadow Copy Service fails to initialize Removable Storage Service.
The application log shows the following error: Application log error  (Figure2):
Volume shadow copy service error: Writer Removable storage manager did not respond to a GatherWriterStatus call.

The system log shows Event ID 15. System log error (Figure 3).

Cause:

This issue can occur if the internal Removable Storage Manager (RSM) database is corrupted.
