How to manually force Backup Exec for Windows Servers to re-index the on-disk catalogs to potentially resolve issues with the Restore Selections not showing up properly or prevent duplicate job failures
Details:
Occasions that can require the on-disk catalogs to be
re-indexed:
- Restore
selections from recent backup jobs are missing from the Backup Exec interface.
- Backup
Job fails to complete with a successful status due to the inability to create
the on-disk catalog.
- A
job to duplicate backup sets may fail due to catalog errors where the catalog
and its associated index are
mismatched.
1. Stop the Backup Exec
services
2. Rename the Catalogs folder to anything other than
"Catalogs". The default location for this folder is: \Program
Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\Catalogs or \Program Files\Veritas\Backup
Exec\NT\Catalogs (See Note 1)
3. Start the Backup Exec services
(an empty Catalogs folder will be created automatically)
4. Launch
Backup Exec and verify the there are no restore selections by clicking on the
restore button.
5. Stop the Backup Exec
services
6. Delete the empty catalogs folder that was automatically
created in step 3
7. Rename the original Catalogs folder back to
"Catalogs"
8. Start the Backup Exec
services
9. Verify with Task Manager that the process:
bengine.exe has 0% CPU utilization before proceeding so that Backup Exec can
complete the re-index process (See Note 2)
10 Launch Backup Exec and
verify that the restore selections are showing up properly
Note 1
The path to the \Catalogs folder can be verified within the Backup Exec
GUI by clicking on the dropdown menu items: Tools | Options |
Catalogs.
Note 2 During the re-index process bengine.exe
will utilize a large percent of CPU possibly up to 100%. The time it takes
to complete the re-index depends on the number and size of the catalog
files.
