VERITAS Storage Foundation (tm) HA Release Note
Addendum Added 8/26/2004
A VERITAS Cluster Server (tm) cluster may
failover due to memory starvation
This problem may occur on a two-node
failover cluster configured with VERITAS Cluster Server (tm), VERITAS File
System (tm), and VERITAS Volume Manager (tm).
When subjected to a large
number of file write requests, a significant amount of available memory is
consumed by File System. When the file system is flushing data to disk,
arbitrary processes can block for an indeterminate period of time waiting for
memory to become free. Under these conditions, the Cluster Server HA daemon may
not be able to exchange regular and frequent heartbeats. The Cluster Server
kernel driver will interpret this as a node failure, causing the node to
panic.
Each node of the cluster on which the problem occurred was
configured with:
Two Intel Pentium III processors running at 728
MHz
512 megabytes of memory
VERITAS was unable to reproduce
this problem on any other systems, and no VERITAS Beta customers have reported
this problem.
It is likely this issue is due to a combination of a
relatively small amount of physical memory and a large amount of data being
written.
When new information regarding this release becomes
available, this TechNote will be updated to include the latest information on
updates, patches, and software issues. VERITAS therefore advises checking this
TechNote from time to time.
