Backup jobs hang in a running state and have to be canceled, and/or fail with "Final error: 0x456 - The media in the drive may have changed." or "Incorrect function" error.
Details:
A backup job can fail with a misleading error if there are any communication issues between Backup Exec (tm) and the tape hardware.
The "Incorrect function" error message may show in the Windows Application Event Viewer Log (Figure 1).

To resolve the media errors, perform the following steps:
1. Confirm that the device drivers and firmware are up to date for all tape hardware
2. Make sure that the controller, cabling, connectors, and termination are configured per hardware manufacturer recommendations
3. Only use tape media that is properly rated for the drive
4. Contact the hardware manufacturer if the errors persist
