VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.0 and 9.1: A restore of Shadow Copy Components directed to a remote Windows 2003 system that does not have the Remote Agent for Windows Servers installed and running on it may result in the Shadow Copy Components being restored to the local media server.
Details:
This issue occurs only if all of the
following conditions apply:
1. The local media server is running
Backup Exec 9.0 build 4454 or Backup Exec 9.1 build 4691
2. Both the local
AND remote machines are running the Microsoft Windows 2003 operating
system
3. The restore credentials must be valid on both the restore target
and the local media server
4. The Backup Exec Remote Agent is either not
installed or not started on a remote system during a restore operation of the
Shadow Copy Components of the remote system
Other operating systems and
other versions of Backup Exec that do not match the above scenario are not
affected by this issue.
The Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers
is required for all local and remote backup and restore operations of
Windows-based operating systems performed with Backup Exec for Windows Servers.
In the event that the Remote Agent for Windows Servers (RAWS) is either not
installed or not started on a remote Windows 2003 computer during a Shadow Copy
Components restore, the Shadow Copy Components restore operation will generate a
warning followed by a successful completion status (Figure 1).
Figure

On
inspection, it may be found that the Shadow Copy Components were restored to the
local media server. This behavior is seen with both manual restores and restores
using the Intelligent Disaster Recovery Option (IDR).
VERITAS
Technical Services strongly recommends that all affected Backup Exec 9.0
installations are upgraded to Backup Exec 9.1.4691 and the following patch is
applied to all Backup Exec 9.1 media servers:
Be4691RHF26_268014.exe
9.1.4691 Hotfix 26
http://support.veritas.com/docs/268014
Be aware that 9.1.4691 Hotfix 26 can only be applied to Backup Exec
9.1.4691 installations. A patch to resolve this issue is not available for
Backup Exec 9.0 therefore, affected Backup Exec 9.0 installations will first
need to upgrade to Backup Exec 9.1.4691, and then apply Hotfix 26. The upgrade
from Backup Exec 9.0 to Backup Exec 9.1 is a free upgrade. Following the
installation of Hotfix 26, restore operations of Shadow Copy Components will no
longer attempt to redirect themselves to the local media server.
Please note that after the patch has been applied, the Backup Exec
Remote Agent for Windows Servers will need to be pushed out to each remote
system being protected by Backup Exec.If it has been determined
that the Remote Agent service was not installed or not running during a time of
restore, and that this issue has been encountered, the following considerations
should be made:
If the local media server has
not been
rebooted:
1. Do
not reboot the system
2. Perform a restore of
the Shadow Copy Components from the latest full
backup:
http://support.veritas.com/docs/236661
If the local media server has been rebooted:
1. Boot the system
into the Active Directory Recovery Mode
2. Perform a restore of the Shadow
Copy Components from the latest full backup if possible
3. If the machine
will not boot or function properly, a full disaster recovery will need to be
performed:
