Disaster Recovery of a SharePoint Portal Server
Details:
Because SharePoint Portal Server uses Windows 2000 security
for authentication, disaster recovery of a SharePoint Portal Server cannot be
separated from the disaster recovery of Windows 2000.
Given below is a
list of requirements needed to complete the procedure:
1. A copy of
VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) for Windows Server with the SharePoint Agent
installed
2. The latest backup of the SharePoint Portal Server that is to
be recovered
3. The SharePoint Portal Server CD
4. Any SharePoint
Portal Server service packs that were applied to the original
installation
Note: A SharePoint Portal Server database cannot be
recovered using backups of individual workspace backups.
The Windows
2000 server must be recovered first. For more information, see Manual
Disaster Recovery of Windows Computers on page 540 of the Backup Exec for
Windows Servers Administrator's Guide. Alternatively, see the Related Documents
section.
Upon the recovery of the Windows 2000 server (after the last
reboot) the SharePoint Portal Server software is installed but not functional.
It must be removed and then reinstalled before SharePoint data can
be restored.
Uninstalling and reinstalling SharePoint Portal
Server
1. Use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to
uninstall SharePoint Portal Server. Restart the server when the uninstall
operation completes
2. Insert the SharePoint CD and install
SharePoint Portal Server to the desired location using the appropriate options
for the environment. When the New Workspace Wizard starts, click
Cancel
3. If applicable, install any SharePoint Portal Server
service packs that were applied to the original
installation
Restoring SharePoint Portal Server
data
1. Place the media, which contains the data that is to be
restored, into the drive
2. On the navigation bar, click
Restore
3. Select the SharePoint Portal data to be
restored
4. Set the appropriate options on the Properties
pane
5. Start the restore job by clicking Run Now
