OFO: Snapshot error (0xa000851c): VSP SnapShot CacheFileBroker was unable to allocate cache files. Check disk space.

Exact Error Message
OFO Snapshot error 0xa000851c : VSP SnapShot CacheFileBroker was unable to allocate cache files. Check disk space.

Details:
This error can occur when Use Default is selected in the Advanced Open File Option (AOFO) Wizard on a machine with a C: drive with not enough free space.

Figure 1

Backup Exec (tm) 9.x and 10.x creates a new cache file for each volume on a server selected in a backup job. For example, if there is a C:, D:, and E: drive on the server and all three are selected in a backup job, Backup Exec will create three AOFO cache files at the same time. If there is not sufficient space on the system to accommodate all three cache files, the initialization process will fail with the message shown above.

In this case, additional hard disk space can be added to the server to accommodate the cache files or separate the backup so that a backup job is created for each volume on the server. Create a job for C:, a job for D:, etc.

In addition, the following change is necessary to allow Backup Exec to create its cache file on a specific volume and therefore allow backups to complete successfully:

1. Run the Advanced Open File Option (AOFO) Wizard from Tools | Wizards | Advanced Open File Option
2. Connect to the machine reporting the AOFO error
3. Clear the check box for Use Default
4. Type in a volume with the most free space, example: D:\
5. Click Next and then click Finish
6. A successful backup will be reported (Figure 2)

This issue could also occur if the location of the Static Volume location is on a mapped drive (Figure 3).

Make sure that the static volume location is a locally attached physical drive.
