How to enable or disable "debug logging" in Backup Exec for Windows Servers

Details:
Backup Exec (tm) for Windows Servers contains features to enable debug logging for troubleshooting purposes. The following instructions can be used to enable this functionality, creating detailed logs that can be reviewed during the troubleshooting process.

To enable debug logging in Backup Exec 9.x for Windows Servers:

Using the Services dialog:

    On Windows NT 4.0:

Using the Registry Editor:

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

        b. Backup Exec 11d or above: Browse to HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Symantec\Backup Exec for Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Logging

To disable debugging in Backup Exec 9.x for Windows Servers:

Using the Services dialog:

Using the registry editor:

Note: Debugging that occurs through the Services applet is temporary and cycling the services or rebooting the machine will stop the debugging. Debugging configured through the Windows Registry allows for continuous debugging. Leaving the services in debugging mode will cause the logs to build up. For this reason, it is advisable to either take the services out of debugging mode when the problem is resolved, delete the older debug files, or configure the logs directory to be compressed. Please keep this in mind when determining which method of debugging to perform on a system.

If it is requested by support, the registry can be altered to change the amount of detail that is reported in the logs as follows:

1. Stop all Backup Exec for Windows Servers services
2. Run REGEDIT.EXE
         b. Backup Exec 11d or above: Browse to HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Symantec\Backup Exec for Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Logging

4. Change the keys Engine NDMP Debug Level (for the Backup Exec job engine) and RANT NDMP Debug Level (for Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers) to either of the following:
Note: Changing the NDMP Debug Level setting is not recommended under most circumstances.
