How to create a user-defined selection in Backup Exec for Windows Servers

Details:
User-defined selections can be used to create shortcuts to shares and save them as user-defined selections. This feature can be used to quickly access shares that have a very long path or that are unavailable when you are setting up a backup job. You can set up direct access to a share by entering its UNC path name or machine name. A share may be unavailable because the network resources used to locate the machine are offline, even though the machine may still be running and available. In some cases, this happens because the machine is on the internet and accessible from within the company's private network, but cannot be located using just its name or normal browsing methods.

To create a user-defined selection, do the following:

1. On the navigation bar, click Backup (Figure 1)

2. On the backup selections pane, locate and expand Remote Selections (Figure 2)

3. Right-click User-defined Selections, and then click User-defined Selections (Figure 2). The User-defined Selections dialog box is displayed.

4. In the UNC Name box, type the server name and volume name (Figure 3)

Note: You can provide TCP/IP addresses for user-defined selections, but Symantec does not recommended it. Backup Exec does not support user-defined selections for IP addresses in a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) environment.

5. Click Add (Figure 3). The share name is displayed in the Selections defined area of the dialog (Figure 4).

The selections that were specified can be selected for backup operations from the User-defined Selections node (Figure 5).
