How to install and uninstall Tape Device Drivers using Tapeinst.exe utility

Details:
This utility is located on the VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) CD-ROM and is copied to the hard disk during installation of Backup Exec. If the BACKUP EXEC was downloaded, its location on the hard disk is the same as was chosen for the installation directory of Backup Exec; the default path is <drive>:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT.

I. Installing VERITAS Tape Device Drivers

Locate the file, tapeinst.exe and double-click to execute it as in Figures 1 and 2.

The screen shown in figure 3 offers the following options:

The first choice is to install VERITAS drivers for all devices, meaning, if there is a device on the system that Backup Exec supports and provides drivers for, then the installer will detect it and copy the appropriate driver to the system. In most cases the system will need to be rebooted before the driver loads.

The second choice is to install VERITAS drivers for any devices that Backup Exec supports and provides drivers for, that does not currently have a driver loaded. In most cases the system will need to be rebooted before the driver loads.

The third choice is to uninstall and remove all Backup Exec drivers. In most cases the system will need to be rebooted before the driver unloads.

The fourth choice is to delete entries for tape devices that are not available. This option is available in Backup Exec 9.0 and later. All configuration entries are deleted for tape devices that are not available, have been removed, or are turned off. To use these tape devices again, run the VERITAS Device Driver Installer to reload the VERITAS tape drivers.

The fifth choice is to use Plug and Play drivers. This option is available in Backup Exec 9.0 and later. This selection is recommended for Windows 2000 or later.

If it is desired to use VERITAS drivers for all devices, select the first option. If it is desired to install VERITAS drivers for devices that do not already have drivers loaded, select the second option and click Next.

The driver wizard will search for devices as seen in Figure 4. When it completes, click Next.
