How to maintain proper drive identification within Backup Exec for Windows NT and Windows 2000 when replacing the physical backup device.

Details:
In order to replace a piece of hardware (i.e. a physical tape drive, tape library or other) being used to backup with Backup Exec for Windows NT/2000 and have the drive be properly identified and numbered, certain steps must be performed. The drive or tape library must be first disabled and then deleted from Backup Exec's "Devices" tab.

If replacing an entire library, perform the following on the drives in reverse order and then the library. For instance, Tape drive 2, then Tape drive 1, then the Tape Library.

1. Right click the tape drive or tape library icon and select PROPERTIES.
2. Select the CONFIGURATION tab and uncheck "Enable device for Backup Exec" (Figure 1).

3. Select OK and then right click the tape drive or tape library again and select DELETE (Figure 2).

Now close Backup Exec and power off the computer. Replace the tape drive or tape library. Once all proper connections have been made and hardware settings verified, turn the computer back on. At this point, open Backup Exec and check the Devices tab to ensure the device is not listed as "offline" and has the proper name and number. For instance, "ARCHIVE 1" rather than a newly assigned name of "ARCHIVE 2".
