Troubleshooting hardware and backup issues with VERITAS Backup Exec (tm), when installed on a Compaq server.

Details:
If Backup Exec is installed on a Compaq server, the following errors or scenarios may occur:

1. Autoloaders or stand alone drives not being detected

2. Autoloaders going offline whenever the server is rebooted

3. Blue screens (BSOD)

4. Dr. Watson

5. Unable to achieve minimum quiet time (open file option)

To assess the cause of the error or behavior, implement the suggestions listed below:

Note: Most of these issues are not specific to Compaq servers, but they are mentioned because they are known to cause backup issues in any environment. Other issues are Compaq specific.

1. Ensure that the tape drive or robotic library is not connected to a RAID controller (most Compaq systems include at least one RAID controller).

2. Separate the tape devices from a controller that also has hard drives connected to it.

3. Use an independent third party controller rather than the onboard/embedded controllers to verify or allow proper device functionality.

4. Ensure that the hardware of the Compaq server is running the latest Compaq SoftPaq/Compaq system drivers.

5. Disable the Compaq Insight Manager, and check the device functionality.

6. Disable the Compaq Surveyor service, and check the device functionality.

7. Upgrade the Insight Manager software to the latest revision available. This can be downloaded from the Compaq Web site: http://www.compaq.com.
