Backup operations using a Hewlett-Packard C1533 Digital Audio Tape drive result in the backup process terminating abruptly. The System Event Viewer Log will report Event ID 9 for SCSI bus time-outs.
Exact Error Message
The device, \Device\Scsi\aic78xx1, did not respond within the timeout period.
Event ID 9 Source is "Error"
Details:
The error (Figure 1) may occur if the Hewlett-Packard (HP)
C1533 Digital Audio Tape (DAT) drive is connected to a very fast controller,
such as an Adaptec 2940 ultra-wide (UW) controller.
Figure

The HP C1533
DAT drive requires the use of a controller with 5-MHz throughput. The Adaptec
2940 UW controller provides 10-MHz or 20-MHz throughput. To resolve this issue,
connect the tape drive to a controller that provides 5-MHz throughput.
Note: Improper SCSI termination may also cause this
behavior.
