After installing Internet Explorer 6 (IE6), Backup Exec causes a pagefault when trying to add an "Exclude Files" entry to a backup job.

Exact Error Message
BEWIN32 caused an invalid pagefault in CDFVIEW.DLL

Details:
If Internet Explorer 6 is installed, a pagefault may occur when attempting to add an "Exclude Files" entry to a backup job

The Exclude Files tab is located in the Backup Job Options Window (Figure 1.)

When pressing the Add button (or in some cases, the Exclude Files button itself), the following message is generated (Figure 2):

After this occurs, the program is unstable and exits, possibly with further pagefault messages.

As Internet Explorer 6 was released after the End of Life announcement for Backup Exec Desktop & Backup Exec Desktop Pro; there is currently no patch for this issue.

Backup Exec Desktop and Backup Exec Desktop Pro work successfully with Internet Explorer 4.x and 5.x and are the only versions tested and supported at the time of this products release.

The CDFVIEW.DLL (an Internet Explorer module responsible for viewing channels)s the module that is reported in the error, but this is not the entire cause of the message.  Uninstalling IE6 has not proven to resolve the issue, as this problem is due to Operating System components that are permanently upgraded by the installation of the new Web browser.

A workaround for this issue has been tested successfully with Windows ME by extracting the original CDFVIEW.DLL from the WinME CD by extracting the CDFVIEW.DLL file from the Win_10.cab file (by double clicking on the Win_10 file and dragging the dll out to the desktop) in the \Win9x folder and replacing the one in the Windows\System directory with this original version.  For this procedure, it is suggesting to rename the old dll file before copying over the new.  It has not been determined what loss of functionality within Internet Explorer can occur when using this older dll.

The only action found in Windows 95 and 98 that bypasses this error is to rename the CDFVIEW.DLL (so that it is no longer used) and relaunch Backup Exec. However, this is not a recommendation, as it is unknown what other applications on the system might need CDFVIEW.DLL to function properly. It may be feasible to temporarily rename this DLL, configure the backup job as needed and rename it back.

Please note that this issue has only been reported on Windows 95, 98 and ME operating systems.
