How to perform an Intelligent Disaster Recovery of a remote Windows NT 4.0 server or workstation using Custom Setup

Details:
1. Insert the bootable diskettes and follow the instructions on the screen. When the Windows NT setup instructions appear, press C to choose Custom Setup (Figure 1).

Note: In most cases, you should use Express Setup. However, use Custom Setup if the SCSI drivers are not present on the boot media or there is a RAID hardware that needs to be configured.

2. Follow the on-screen prompts to prepare the hard drive(s) for recovery (Figures 2 to 6).

3. Once the hard drive(s) have been partitioned, select the partition to install Windows NT, and then press ENTER (Figure 7).

4. Once the target partition has been selected, select a file system (FAT or NTFS), and then press ENTER (Figure 8). The Windows NT Setup will then copy the necessary files to the hard drive.

5. Verify that no diskettes or CDs are in the drives, and then press ENTER to reboot the system (Figure 9).

6. After the reboot, the Intelligent Disaster Recovery (IDR) Wizard is automatically started. When the wizard appears, insert the diskette which contains the latest Disaster Recovery (DR) file into drive A.


7. To use a DR file for automatic recovery, click Next (Figure 10).

8. Select the DR file for the protected computer, and then click Next (Figure 11).

9. The next wizard allows additional changes to be made to the partition. To make partition changes, click Run Disk Administrator, otherwise, click Next to continue the recovery process (Figure 12).

10. At the Select Restore Method screen, select Use the network to restore from a remote backup server, and then click Next (Figure 13).

11. The Install Windows NT Networking screen will be displayed, select Manual, and then click Next. Please provide an OEM network driver media if prompted (Figure 14).

12. Windows NT networking will now be installed (Figures 15 to 19).

13. The Network Identification screen appears. Leave the default selection, Workgroup, selected. Click Next (Figure 20).

Note: It is not necessary to add the machine to the domain at this time, as this is a temporary install.


14. A prompt to log into a VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) server where the tape device is located is displayed. Enter the Backup Exec Service account information, and then click Next (Figure 21).

15. Intelligent Disaster Recovery displays a list of drive letters to restore. Each drive letter corresponds to a backup set listed in the computer's disaster recovery file. Click Next (Figure 22).

16. An informational alert will appear advising to select Restore NT Registry in the General Options and Restore Over Existing Files in the Advanced Options (Figure 23).

17. Click OK. The wizard will wait for the recovery to be submitted on the Backup Exec server (Figure 24).

18. In the Restore Selections tab, select the entire volume to be recovered by selecting the box that corresponds with the machine to be recovered (Figure 25).

19. Click Restore, and then click on the General tab. Select the Restore NT Registry check box (Figure 26).

20. Click the Advanced tab, and then select Restore Over Existing Files (Figure 27).

21. Click Run Now to submit the restore job (Figures 28 to 29).

22. Once the recovery process is complete, the Automated Process Complete screen will appear. Click No to complete the registry update process (Figures 30 to 31). Once the registry has been updated, click Next.

23. Click Finish to reboot the original operating system (Figure 32).
